I have an installation of a glass block screen, 4 blocks wide by 7 blocks high, installed on a Mexican limestone/travertine tile tub deck. The block wall cracks away from the honed tile surface. I don’t seem to be able to get the glass block mortar to hold without cracking. None of the mortar joints in the block wall have cracked only the bottom joint to the tile. I believe this joint is cracking do to thermal expansion during seasonal temperature changes.
It has been suggested that I do my best to remove the mortar from the tile to block joint and then use a heavy duty construction epoxy to try to bond the block to the tile. My concern with this solution is that it may just transfer the problem from the block mortar to cracking the tile. Honed limestone is a relatively weak substrate in tension and the problem of cracked mortar is mild compared to a broken tile below a glass block wall.
The owners are very particular and using a colored caulk does not seem to be an option as it would never match the color of the mortar.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. – Steve
