Katrina reads me a passage from the new FHB that some reader wrote in about using felt paper under the flooring.
She asked me why I wasn’t doing that.
My response was that I’m using handmade type rose head nails which will be driven in straight vs toenailed being that I’m face nailing everything and I dont feel comfortable with just the nails.
Already did the living room a year ago with fantastic results, Not one bounce or squeek.
The question I have is: In the letter the guy wrote he says to use polyurethane glue. In my living room a year ago I did happen to use PL Premium but I have the entire rest of the house to do and at about $5 dollars a tube for PL Premee It’d cost a small fortune so I opted to buy several cases of PL400 that sits next to my radiator to keep it nice and soft.
Anyone see a problem using the PL400? Its almost a third less in cost.
Spose I’ll call the 800# on Friday morning but tween then and now…whadya think

I am thinking of doing a very similar floor in the near future, so I'd love to see some pics when you get them.

No problemo....we're starting tomorrow...day after T-giving.
Been looking for stains but Minwax has nohing I like so I'll now look into Cabots.
I'd hate to start making my own stain...although I've done it before but...I only have one life to live in this lifetime....does that make amy sense...probably not

I stopped using glue under wide plank. On a couple of occasions I have had planking split due to seasonal movement. I belive that the glue held the board in place as it contracted and caused it to split. No glue alows it to move. However it is hard to argue when you have had good results in the past. good luck
Bostik has a glue made for wood floors. It comes in three gal buckets and trowels down. Allows for minimal movement but doesn't set hard like the PL Premium does.
Still not cheap.

You dont want anything that holds tight. you need some flexability. Sikaflex is the strongest and most flexable adhesive I've ever seen. It is expensive but may fit your budget seeing you dont need as much as PL4 or 5
Well, I did my whole living room a year ago with PL and havent had any trouble yet so I'll let you know. The secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!

you mentioned stain dilemma
having the same problem w/ some pine bookcases I've built
before have gone w/ a half natural half fruitwood stain but now there is too much purple in the fruitwood - my next step is to look into the Watco lighter stains - choices will be few but always true to the wood
try using a conditioner on the wood first...a sample piece first.
Didnt help me, but it is something to consider/try.
I finally found a stain I like.
Cabots....using the Cherrywood color....compiments the island I'll be putting in.
One more hour downstairs and we're done with the insatallation...then upstairs.

Paul,
I see yer toes in the last pic...lol...QUESTION: I need an answer TODAY (this morning/afternoon) otherwise forget it.
What color stain is that??
My floor finishing guys are coming tomorrow and I'm slightly flipping out cause I cant find the right color.
Stained the section under the fridge yesterday with Cabots Cherrywood cause we thought we liked it but 5:30 this AM we dont anymore...too red.
I tried maybe a dozen samples on scraps of wood from Minwax to Cabots and its soo late for me to mix up my own stain.
The color you have is real similar to the color I did in my living room but that was a water bourne stain and I ain't doin' that again so...
Hoping my paint/stain supplier can make some stain up for me that matches my living room. Looks like the same color you used.
Katrina is on her way there in an hour.

OK....not only am I too late to help with stain colors, but apparently I`m too late to advise on flooring glue as well.
That said, I`d recomend you use the glue most appropriate for the instance.....be it flooring or anything else....cost be damned!! This is your house brotha.....ya wouldn`t skimp on a customer....don`t you deserve the very best as well?
You hangin` those top dollar cabinets with drywall screws? Why would you trust an inferior product to handle your top dollar flooring?
Your saving on the labor.....don`t be "penny wise" on the materials.

As I said...the floor in the living room I installed over a year ago has no separating and no cracks so????? Isnt that proof enough?
Its been through some hefty seasonal changes as well as some water coming through an open window while I was away...no bad reactions to any of it at all.Certainly ahvent cut costs or corners. thats never been an issue.
PL Premium is over five bucks a tube.

Wow....an entire year? I guess you`re right....that`s proof positive.
On a serious note....NO!!!!
I`m not tryin` to tell you what to do pal....just suggesting you don`t cut any corners. You`ve been doing this long enough that you don`t need my advice.....then again, you did ask for it.
I will have to go back and read the original post though.....I thought you said you used a higher grade glue on the floors you installed last year and were wondering whether or not you should shell for it this go round, or if the PL 400 was "good enough".
Either way.....best of luck to ya!J. D. Reynolds

the asphaultum is a common additive to your basic walnut hued stains, I have had real good results with it..sounds backwoodsy but it really gives a nice color on pine and oak esp.
Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

just did about a dozen sample ...lighter...darker and with some cherry mixed in to give it more of a nutmeg color.
Real interesting results but no go...ugh,
At least I have sample boards now on pine with five trillion different colors.
Might just go with the cherrywood.
What I did with the living room looks great but I wont use water based stain anymore and even if I did they wont sell me any without the floor.
Been looking around for stores that make it around here to no avail...they just match paints.
Thanks anyway bro

When i worked with Micheal Dresdner at Hydro-cote Supply, we had great results with OUR waterbased stains and finishes, what is your beef with WB? The grain raising? Color fastnes? add some GREEN tint to the mix, that helps at times..or wiat for Goldhiller to teach ya.

Not sure what happens when you go over water based stains with poly but with the tongue oil finish i used it pulled the stain up so I had to work faster than I wanted to. I even waited two days for the stain to dry. I heard other people had the same problem as I did. The finish was recommended to me by the floor company that sells the pine...Carlisle.Not ever using tongue oil for a floor again.EchhhhhhhhI just sanded the area up under where the refrigerator goes. I stained and polyed it yesterday cause I need to put the fridge back there before the floor guys start tomorrow..(no where easy to put that monster)..so I sanded up the Cabots Cherrywood and put down Minwax Cherry....Much less red than Cabots. Looks pretty good so I think I'm sticking with that. I'll see after it dries.forget about small sample pieces..I stained an approx 3x3' area. Way better in determining how it'll look....and I think it looks good. Waiting for it to dry another few minutes before I make a final decision.
Thanks Duane...you're no relation to Duane Hickman by any chance???lol

Good luck buddy..Uh..when someone asks for spelling..it's "Duane, like ALLMAN, BOBBICK , and Eddy.."I can't see how Tung would "pull" the stain, only oil is compatible with oil, and water compatible with water..I truly never had an oil poly or varnish "pull" a WB dye/ or stain..I really like WB for many reasons, and am perplexed that you are perplexed..somthin don't jive here.I do know that some so called WB contain a lot of esters like anti freeze, and they can cross contaminate with a Oil finish, but most have been stabilized in this era..I'd hook you up with Dresdner if he is still at the ZAR website..A wild stab, is http://www.woodfinishing.com ? tell em Duane sent ya..the man is a wealth of knowledge.Or Google 'Micheal Dresdner" that'll do ya ..Happy Channuka (SP)? http://www.michaeldresdner.com/here...talk with himBTW..he's from Redbank...lives in Wa state now.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural WoodworksRepairs, Remodeling, Restorations. hey, don't laff..it is the SAME stuff as minwax..asphaultum is VERY common..don't wanna believe me?..bite yerself. No way to know what else is in that roofing doo-doo too. Walnut stain and asphat repair products might contain one common ingredient, but controlling the colour, penetration, and reactions with top finishes is going to be pretty unpredictable your way. Ar eyou saying that since you worked with jhim, you automatically absorbed al that he knows? or that you can imitate the process each and every time with the same warrantee and satisfaction?I didn't think so. like I started to say, sometimes you impress me. You are a walking encyclopedia. A study in factography.but sometimes you impress me the other way when you lay on with one single fact and forget all the other information connected to the final product desired. But don't take it all so serious. A bite here, another bite there. Pretty soon there is weeping and gnashing of teeth....
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
I'll concede to your point of impurities in the various brands or formulations of generic "roof cement" many contain plasticizers, and god knows what else..and yes plasticizers are a major ingredient in finishesAnd I will also say that NO, I have not absorbed the man's entire brain, but he did tutor me to lead hand's on workshops using a relatively new product and how to explain the chemistry behind it's inception..I really know a LOT more than I want to or need to know about paint chemistry ( i classify almost any top coat as 'paint', I know it's not always correct but we sent guitars to "the paint room") and how water base finishes in particular are formulated.Back to aspaultum for a moment..that particular ingredient (additives in roof cement not included) is THEE basis of Minwax stain (walnut/dark walnut/and many others which do not use a burnt sienna or burnt umber earth pigment) that is so commonally seen on a large percentage of current work.Thank you for the high regards of my encyclopedic vastitude, I assure you it is from rote memory. Not an innate ability to manufacture the concepts..I preach what I remember being shown as facts..thats all. I may have never had a truly original thought in my life. ok, the 'bite yerself' mighta been homegrown..LOLI love your attitude and wisdom, and will gladly concede any time we have a disagreement..I'd hate to see an old fart like you keel over discussing roof tar..not worth the show.respectfully, Duane

That is a Minwax stain. Can't gaurantee the colour choice because my guy does some mixing and matching. it is common to use the American Walnut mixed with the Dark walnut, I think.Top coats are a satin Minwax poly. I and the owners originally wanted to use the Waterlox but time frame was getting short and the polyurethene is a certain time frame cure. With the Waterlox, it is cured when it feels like being cured. They are moving in next week with furniture. Guess I'll be on punch list duties this weekend.

My floor refinishers have been here 8 hrs yesterday and got her at 8 this AM.I'm going with Ipswhich Pine (sp?). Compliments the cabs I'm getting on the 10th of Jan.I never heard more people complain about finishing a floor in my life!!!
They say that old pine is no biggie which I already knew,,,much harder than the new stuff but never the less...it is what it is. The floors look awesome sanded.
Wish I hadnt set the nails a light 3/16"...should have been mabe an 1/8". Live and learn...So upstairs thats the route I'll take.
We're almost done upstairs...master bed bath vestibule walk in closet and several other closets....I think this time I'll make my own stain over the weekend or try your mix.
Be well and those floors are pristine you did!!!!!
