Anyone know of any good looking window security bars? Everything I’ve seen has been overly ornate or prison-like. I prefer modern clean lines and have yet to see a product to match my taste. My basement windows are quite accessible so I want some sort of protection from a BNE.
Anyone have another suggestion for window/entry protection?
thanks everyone!!!

draw something up and bring it to a weldor, or a tech school, or as an excuse to buy a welder.
Then powdercoat and install
If these cover bedroom windows, give a thought to how they can remain egress in case of fire.

If not egress windows and you don't need to get things in/out of them or need complete ventilation, think about glass block. Still not completely secure, but would take some serious bashing to get in. Can be installed with small/hopper type ventilating panels.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Most of our design work is in subsidized urban areas. A zoning condition for many of these areas is that security bars are not allowed over the outside of the windows (to lessen the 'prison feel' of the street).
There are decorative security grilles, but they get costly. Same with using something stronger than tempered glass (i.e., bullet glass). Glass block is a good option for basement windows . . . more expensive than windows, but not astronomically so. The cheapest option is to think about why someone would break in. They are less inclined to do so if they can't see what they're getting. Mini-blinds or window coverings can help. Maybe go to a local plastic distributer and find some semi-translucent acrylic/polycarb sheets, and cut to fit behind the regular windows.
The bars at my office are on the inside. No rust, no maintenance, and they're hidden by the blinds.

Another way to go would be one of those film lamination retrofit processes. I saw that on one of those TLC or Discovery cable shows, "It takes a Thief".
