Anyone have opinions on different grades of cedar clapboard siding? I had to remove part of an exterior wall last year as part of replacing a beam, and now I’m trying to finish that job by replacing the siding. I may take off more siding in order to foam-insulate a kitchen from the outside (pour foam, not enough access from inside without gutting).
I get very high material cost estimates locally: $4.50/ft for clear unprimed, $2.69/ft for A&Better FJ primed, a contractor quoted me $7/ft for clear primed. Quite a price difference. I would be installing 1×10 beveled primed, to be painted. I guess I’m wondering if FJ A&Better would be considered acceptable. This is a 80-yo house in a nice but not super-nice area (that has gotten way more attention from its owner than it deserves). I will probably live here till divorce or death.
I’d like to use Dow Weathermate for a rain screen, with Obdyke rainslicker over it. Would that cause any problems matching with existing siding, since it would fur out the replacement siding? Not sure how far out it furs, might hide it by going back to a doorway.

is that lin ft or sq ft coverage?
For the kind of job, the FG should be fine

If FJ means finger joint and Taylor lives in wet or even occaisionly very damp climate I would pass on it. I live in a seasonally wet climate and finger joint doesn't even always stand up to interior work- never on exteriors. Especially if he plans on staying in the house.
Nortern NJ, humid and wet, thanks to you and Piffen for your opinions.I saw a FH article by Arnold and Guertin that says they use FJ A&Better these days, I can understand why given the price. Exposures in this neighborhood tend to be larger than in NE (8" exposure on my house), which may make a difference. I am thinking that FJ is less obvious with smaller exposure.
I am in a wet climate and have had good experiences with PFJ. the old stuff did telegraph twenty years ago, but what we get now is better glues and process, along with prepainting to keep the moisture out.
I suppose it can matter who makes it and who handles it. That is something to check out locally and SEE the product.

Linear feet.
I'm told the price of clapboard cedar siding just went through the roof recently. It's hard to even find yards that will carry the 1x10 stuff.
