Some “bargins” get ya into trouble, like these granite and marble slabs. Actually, after wandering thru the stone place I was so amazed by the beauty I had to have a pickup load of odds/ends. Dumb, maybe, but real compost for ideas. So after cutting, shaping, polishing and making an interior ply-counter that can take 1/720 flex, here’s todays question from a tired paper-pusher: how to properly set/bed using thin-set when substrate is not level (I have never buttered anything but bread)(I’ve ck’d the archives and read all my FHB back to issue 8)…these are pieces up to 16 x 48, and I dont want the mortar to all gush out. I want to avoid cement board; learning error was to buy a “thin-set” (max 3/16th) full-flex premium mortar that specs out over ply; PROBLEM: The ply surface varies, gouges up to 1/4 inch over this 16″ x 10 foot run; shd I screed a first thin coat to make it level (can U feather an edge w/ thin-set), dry, then set in a second coat with a 5/8 or 3/4 notch trowel? (note: the stone has been squatting there for a year, no cracks, and I realize I cd “spot” it w/ liquid nails/silicone…but I wd like to learn to do it right)(by the way, what did the Greeks and Romans and Eqyptian use before all these fancy diamond edges and adhesives…boy have we lost a lot!) Thx Rand
