I laid a small tile floor and grouted, but the grout turned out all discolored when it dried – some places pale, like the colorant was not evenly mixed or it dried unevenly. Note that I DID mix the powder before adding water, as I always do. First time I ever had this problem.
I re-wetted the grout several times, hoping is would dry more evenly, but to no avail. I don’t look forward to removing it and regrouting. And actually, the floor is so small and the tiles so cheap, I’d be quicker to just pull up the tile and redo it from scratch. But fist, I’d like to hear so suggestions from ya’ll folks.
One option I was thinking is the color is nice and even when it’s wet, so maybe a sealer that will leave it wet looking (but not shiney)
Another option is to stain the grout but have never done it before. Is it tricky? Do I need to acid wash it first, or anything like that? Does grout stain work very well?
My options are to salvage what’s there or tear out. Digging out and regrouting isn’t worth while.

Okay, I'll try staining it, see what happens. Thanks for all the replies. :)

Seems like if you want to try staining this is the floor to experiment on - the worst that can happen is that you end up tearing out, which was your other option anyway.
Staining an uneven grout will (usually) lead to uneven results.
You might start by waiting longer. I've had cases where the grout didn't even out for several days.
If that doesn't work, dig it out (a dremel ro zip tool works wonders) and re-grout. Be sure to not use water when mixing the grout -- use the admix that's readily available.

Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.

Could be wrong, but I think the grout that comes with the latex additive already in the powder says to mix with water only."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Not additive in this grout, at least not mentioned on the package. But anyway, I used water. I think it's just bad grout. See my work at TedsCarpentry.comBuy Cheap Tools! BuildersTools.net
Any chance you used too wet a psonge when cleaning the grout up? I've seen that cause uneven color...

That's possible, but I doubt it. I'm real careful about not using too much water since I had the same experience with blue grout some years ago. Fortunately, it was wall grout and easy to fix. This time it's floor grout - sanded and like scraping granite to remove.
I may have lucked out on this one. They're not real happy with their choice of floor tile, so I may be off the hook. It's only a 3' x 4' powder room, so if they decide to change out the tile, I'll get a different brand of grout. I think it may be the home depot grout I used. Only thing I can think could have caused it. See my work at TedsCarpentry.comBuy Cheap Tools! BuildersTools.net
