I need to replace all the gutters and leaders on my 115 year old home. I can go with the standard “open type” gutters or I can get the “topped” gutters with a lip opening. The topped, lip type gutter offer the advantage of keeping most of the dead leaves and debris out. I understand the main disadvantage of the topped gutters is ice damming. Ice damming is already a problem with my current roof. (There’s no urgent need to replace the roof. Anyway it’s financially out of the question).
My questions: Do these “topped” gutters really work and do they contribute to ice damming?
Thanks for the help.
