I am designing a deck which requires a very long cantilever and allways loved the look of the hammer truss. Just wondering if i can make it work.

and what would a poor carp like me call a "hammer truss "
is that some canuckian term for something i call by another name ?
It's a timber framing term. I have seen them in churches and in timberframe books that I used to own but that have been leant out and not returned. You know that drill.

it's a truss you gotta hamber on to fit it into place, of course...http://www.coyoteloghomes.ca/images/Hammer-Beam-Truss.jpghttp://www.northwoodsjoinery.com/image/29311-v2.jpg

I'm with Mike smith - I don't have a clue what a hammer truss is.
But the title definietly caught my attention.
(-:
See my reply to Mike. To go a bit further the brace is usually curved.

i found about 5 cuts in my 1906 edition of "Light & Heavy Timber Framing Made Easy"......Fred T. Hodgson
( 50 cents at a yard sale )
they all show about what the other posters have shown
it says the finest example is Westminster Hall in London... 68' span
then it shows some nice adaptations for up to 45'
using a scissors for the hidden upper area and the same hammer configuration for the lowerMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Those are really cool trusses. Makes me wanna build one. ; -)
But that said, what do these have to do with a cantelevered deck?
Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PA
That's where it gets wierd Mike. The footprint of the deck is over the driveway so posts won't cut it at one end. They want the deck to span the full width of the house. probably 14' deep. I am thinking cantilever of some variety but one corner is probably a 12'-14' cantilever.
Here is the front of the house. There are actually 2 levels to the deck.
Second floor full width and third floor probably half. I am just starting to think about this project..........
Edit to add that it is only one corner needs to be cantilevered. The rest is fine to be carried x posts.
