I’m replacing some 5′ wide exterior wooden steps (5 steps). The steps are from a back door and there is nothing on either side of the steps. To minimize conduits for water and I will fasten all wood from underneath using pocket-hole screws and poly glue. Now I’m looking for ideas for a nice handrail which will have to attach to the steps. Currently there is an old wrought-iron rail from probably 20-30 years ago. I’d like to replace that rail with something “nicer” and something low maintenance. The house is a modest 1850 colonial in New York State. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi Straitg,
I've attached some designs that might be good for your particular application. Depending on the surroundings you may or may not want to attach the handrail to the house siding or set the posts in concrete. This will help to strengthen the overall hand rail as simply a wood base would not hold over time as folks begin to lean and grab on the rail. The last image I attached also shows some painting options (called a bronze patina finish). Feel free to check out a full gallery for more ideas.

Hey Andrew - nice response to the post. It was clear and actually answered his question.
If you could do one more thing you would rank as Super Awesom in my book:

Just thought I'd mention that if you get no reply from straitg, it's because the original post is near 8 yrs old.
