Hand-split shingles anybody?

| Posted in General Discussion on November 29, 2001 05:13am

Just thought to ask if anybody needs any hand-splits. I’m getting ready to clear the yard in prep for the next couple of logs. I’ve got 24″ white oak & 14-16″ old growth cypress, only a few sq. of each. Bill D. QWC.

    Where are you located, Bill?

*Jim, I'm WAY DOWN in so. maryland (western shore). The oak blanks are cutoffs/runouts left from some 5-6' oak clapboards for a local museum. The cypress are "shorts" (less than 16" ) and some "seconds" or #2's. Most of the cypress specs to about 20-40 growth rings/inch.I'll try for some pics ,but I'm way behind the tech age ( I mean , I still use a froe for gosh sakes! )Bill d. QWC

*Bill D. - A dear friend of mine taught me how to make shingles about 15 years ago. I had almost forgotten how until I saw your post. Man, he put me to work and gave me three froes when I was done. Still got'em. I think I might get the urge to make some shingles for my daughter's playground.

*Bill d. I would not mind the drive down -- I have a small milk shed that is going to need a new roof in the next year or so -- how many square of each do you have and would I be able to put one on one side and the other on the other side and not have to look strange -- would I be able to fit all of it in a car with a good trunk and back seat. I would not mind the drive -- How much? thanks Bill mail would not go through so I posted hereDudley

*Dudley, sorry I was so long in a reply but my computer got sick. I've only 2-3 sq. ea. but am in the process of more clapboard and shingles; so I hope to have more cut/run outs and shorts in 6-8 mo. How many do you need? If you come at the right time I'll let you light the fuse to blow the log in half. It's a blast!! As for how much? Make me an offer. But these are BLANKS not finished shingles. You'll Have to do some finishing ( tapering ) with a draw knife or somthing. Bill D. QWC
