Hello,
I am looking for a good book or video on installing handrails and balusters. There seems to be a lot of info on building stringers and stairs but nothing that really looks at the railing side of things. Any thoughts? Will I just have to learn it all from experience and turn some good material into scrap!

I would highly recommend Taunton's "For Pros by Pros: Building Stairs." While it does start out with instruction on stringers, I think it also covers railings quite nicely.
R U doing one set only or making a carreer of it?

Andrew,
Piffin brings up a good point. If you plan on doing one job and want to do it yourself then try the Taunton book but beware. One miscut volute or post and half the money you were saving is gone.
When I wanted to learn to install rails I already had a bag full of tricks and it wasn't a huge leap for me. I made arrangements to work with a friend, for free of course, for a few weeks and he taught me.
Funny story, I was learnng the basics and had planned on spending a month with this guy becuase he did some high end stuff and I wanted to learn all I could. I knew his wife was pregnant but not due for a while. On Wed of week two he let me know she was in labor and he would be taking a week or two off. The day ended with " You've got the hang of this, let me show you how to set up this curved rail and cut this volute and you'll be fine". I installed rails for three reputable shops for the next three years with only one call back.
If you are near New Jersey or Eastern P.A let me know and I can hook you up with a friend if ya need but don't wait too long as I leave for FT Knox for two months on Sunday.
