Depends on the flooring choice.1/2" for carpet as a rule.Less for the really cheap stuff.

1 1/4" door to floor is standard.
You can micro manage this for different flooring, that's why we are all retiring rich...
unless specified just hang the doors as they come.but if you know what the flooring will be then cut to that. if your customer doesnt know what the flooring will be at the time the doors are installed i have an extra charge to come back later to trim all the doors $20 each. some one suggested 1 1/4 as standard . that is way to much.what if they install laminate or thin wood flooring they would end up with 3/4 to 1 inch gap.
actually...HVAC guys will tell ya around a 3/4" gap is needed for air flow with forced air heat.

We usually cut doors swinging over carpet an 1 1/2" over the subfloor(unless otherwise spec'd)...some of those have even rubbed. Even that leaves about a 1/4" space between carpet and door. And in narrow halls with air returns, we've had to go as much as an inch and a quarter above the carpet, per the HVAC installer. Cheap carpet has nothing to do with cutting door bottoms off. If this is not for yourself, the GC should give you the magic number. EliphIno!
Handyman, I said 1 1/4" is standard.
Do you really want to have a problem with that?

Come on, watch where this one goes.
Sit back and get ready for some door science.

I'd ask your flooring installer. Around here, I'd say 1/2" is pretty standard. But some only want 3/8"
Can't imagine why anyone would want 1 1/4", but things vary so much from region to region - That could just be what they're used to doing.
That's part of the reason I suggested asking locally. If your flooring guys want 1 1/4" and you put them at 1/2", they aren't really gonna care what some guys on the internet said.

I'd be talking about the distance to the bottom of the door, not the jamb and casing. That would 3/8" for carpet, especially since the berbers are in vogue. EliphIno!
I always buy prehung doors. Set the jamb height, and let the door worry about itself.
Since virtually ALL houses around here have forced air heating/AC, I don't worry too much about ventilation.I have the oldest typewriter in the world. It types in pencil.
For new doors: Forget about the spacing although it should be around 3/4 to 1" to allow air flow for ventillation systems etc. Remember the bath fan that wouldn't clear the fog off the mirror because there wasn't enough air comming in under the door?
I hang doors for a living and I can't remember the last time I measured the gap at the bottom of a door.
Cut your Jambs 81 3/4" and set them on a 3/8" shim for carpet areas or tile on concrete.
Cut your jambs 81 3/8" and set them on a 3/4" shim for hardwood or 3/8 shim for tile on 3/8"underlay.
If you have a cluster of doors in one area keep the top of the doors at the same level, adjust the bottom of the jambs as needed to allow for changes in flooring.

I am a finish carpenter and had 1 home where the opening was not high enough for the door (rough openinh at 81" from top of subfloor) Gc says hang the door as high as possible- he'll fix later....
The gc was the framing contractor and the home owner so he can have as much clearance as he wants !!!
First thing I thought of when I read yer title was...

You shouldn't get "hung" up on technicalities...A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.
