Detached garage needs gutters. The splash back is killing the siding. But the roof is existing comp shingles with a 1×1 metal drip edge. Roof/garage are maybe 5 years old. Sorry, but it came like this – it’s not my fault! So I bought 4″ gutter with a 1″ nailing flange and gutter clips. I’m no gutter expert, but this is SOP here in NorCal.
But how do I lift the shingles back and up so I can nail that flange? And even harder, how do I nail the gutter clips which would require bending a given shingle even further back? I seem to recall seeing a tool designed for exactly this purpose, but maybe it was just wishful thinking. Is there an ideal temperature for this operation? Too cold, they snap. Too hot, they bend and suddenly kink. All advice much appreciated.
Personally, I don’t like gutter spikes – I’ve seen too much dry rot in rafter tails. But they may be my fall back option.

If your roof has sound fascia boards, GSW inc. makes the 'Rainmaster' and 'Tuffflow' gutter/downspout lines that are easy to install and durable. The fastening clips screw into the fascia board...just snap a chalkline at the proper pitch.
