I would like to install 2- 30×30 maple peninsula cabinets that extend 5 feet from wall over peninsula in new kitchen and not hang them from soffit on ceiling so it will be open above to match rest of kitchen. What are the possible options for doing this correctly and safely.

The only way I know is to hang them on rods.
*That, or put supports under them.
*Threaded rod through to the bottom of the cabinet. Sleeve them with painted pipe, copper, maybe wood. Dbl nut and washer.
*If you hang them with rods just be sure that there is enough structural strength in the ceiling to handle the weight of the cabinets you are hanging. Being able to attach one end to a wall would surely help the situation.
*Rods through the ceiling to anchors in the ceiling joists or trusses. Not attached to the walls and ceiling so you don't get racking when the house moves. Double check that both the cabinets and the ceiling anchors are strong enough. If you want some space between the top of the cabs and the ceiling cover the rod with polished copper pipe or whatever turns your crank.
*Threaded rods are the way to go. But beware. The further they hang down from the ceiling, the more they will want to move or swing. Don't expect them to be rock solid. They won't move with the wind, but they will be a little bouncy. Attaching one end to the wall will help a great deal.Ed. Williams
*Pardon if I'm a bit sensitive on the subject; but take a lot of care if you fasten them to both the ceiling and a wall. Unless you build in a good deal of flexibility on one or the other when the house moves either the cabinets or the house will be damaged. So, the best option is to fasten only on one or the other(ceiling or wall) and to accept what that brings you. If you choose to hang them by a rod instead of fastening directly to the ceiling you will get some sway.
