bronco,
traditionally furniture (and a mantle is considered furniture) is made from hard maple while soft maple is used for less esoteric stuff.. However I have some soft maple (boxelder is a soft maple) used in my home because of the wicked red streaks in it.
Due to the affects of heat I wouldn't make a mantle out of anything but fine hard all white maple.
thanks for the information bronco
If it's painted, soft is OK. Clear finish, go with hard. Watch the router bits and saw blades, 'cause it'll burn if you stop and it's a pita to get'em out...
