Hardi Lap siding without cornerboards.
Has anyone put up Hardi without cornerboards? I have seen the end product and i like the way it looks. Seem like it might be pretty fragile at the corners. Are there different ways to return the corners (like cedar shakes). Thanks, Shorty

Are you talking about using individual metal caps on the corners or fitting the corners without corner caps?
That method works well with cedar shingles but Hardi Plank is much harder to work with and the corners would indeed be fragile.
Yeah, it would be mitered and caulked w/out metal caps. It looks good. You think it would last?
It would be a very time consuming process to mitre fiber cement siding and get a good fit at each corner. Fiber cement is somewhat brittle and
would most likely break if something hits a corner. It is a real pain to replace a piece especially if it has been blind nailed.
FWIW, the easy answer is no. The Hardi siding is made up of 3 plies and IMHO can not be mitered, but Hardi shingles can (different thickness and hardness).

We used 2x2 corner boards, and they are very subtle; they almost disappear.
We came up with an idea to use an alternating pattern with 7", 7" and 4" exposures, and it turned out really nice.

How 'bout a photo?
We used the metal caps on our 8" Masonite residing job. Real pleased with the appearance, and more weather-tight than corner boards.
happy?
Yeah, it looks like it would take for ever to get it all to work out. thanks for the response.
Rather than mitering, sometimes a butt joint is made, usually alternating sides. (I think this is called "interleaved" or some such.) Not as difficult as a miter, but the ends still need to be cut at a slight angle to the vertical, and the pieces need to be pretty exact in length.
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people
