Hardi plank nails

MarkH | Posted in Construction Techniques on February 12, 2006 04:48am

What kind of nails are you using to hang hardi siding?

Ring or smooth, EG, HD, double HD, stainless, Head style/size, shank diameter, blunt or sharp point, etc.

Currently siding a houe with 2" hot dipped galv. ring shank and is working well. I have also used 1 3/4" roof nails but I prefer the ring shank. smaller head than roofing nail means less chance of head hanging accidentally below the next courses lap.

Hardi just recommends corrosion resistant fasteners with a .221 or .267 head, 1 1/2 long if blind nailing.  Hardi recommends roofing nails also, especially for wider planks because of the bigger head.  I heard they used to recommend only stainless nails.

I have a Hitachi NV65AH coil nailer and I was thinking of using the Maze nails, but they are ring shank or smooth and either double hot dipped galv or stainless.  The ones labelled for James Hardi are smooth.  Hitachi fiber cement nails are smooth shank but EG, and I read somewhere that they weren't all that great.

It seems that fiber cement might blow out on the back with ring shank, but if not I would rather have ring shanks. So, I guess my biggest question is if ring shanks are ok?

I am bidding on some bostitch siding nails stainless steel 15 degree ring shank blunt diamond point coil nails C6R90BDSS on eBay.  Probably will get outbid, but I wonder how good these would be to use.

mark...we use an 1 3/4 Hot Dipped Galv roofing nail from Maize Nails for the blind nailing

and a bostich 8d ring shank SS for the face nailing

i think you will find the 6d is a little lightMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

Did you previously use the Hitachi NV65ah nailer?  I thought you were using a bostitch nailer now?  I bought the haitachi nailer recently.

I plan on blind nailing. Think the 6p is light for that?  They recommend only 1 1/2 nails which seems short to me.  I have a box of C6P99DG bostitch nails for the N80CB coil nailer which are .099 shank thickcoat galv, but they arent specd for the Hitachi, although it is in the upper limit for it.  I don't like the wire collation, and wonder if the "thickcoat" galv is good for long term since it is just EG, zinc chromated, then plastic coated.  Ohio weather is not really severe here.

all our guns are bostich.. i had a nice hitachi roofer that got stolen..

i replaced  the two roofing guns we lost with a new bostich rn46 & a Max roofer

for blind nailing i like a roofing nail, 1 3/4  HD .. and the only one i could find  that makes a true HD is Maize, special order..

no sweat for you , but the salt air we get around here will find it's way to any nail  used for trim , siding , or wood roofingMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

Mark, I got a sample of these nails from Maze at a JLC show. The rep said they had developed them with Hardi, blah blah blah.

They are 2" 15º wire collated. Double hot dipped, fairly rough coat. For use with Hardi plank & panel.

Fits Hitachi NV65AH among others sez on box, I'm using a N64C Bostich.

Part number CLWHD 115. Think they are about $90 with UPS for box of 3,200.

My house was just done with 1-3/4" SS Bostitch wire coil ringshanks through a new Bostitch N66 gun.  Got the nails for only $50 a box at HD, clearance section, otherwise probably would have used galvanized nails.
