I want to put a “water shed” over my back door- it goes onto a deck with overhead beams taht are open (has no roof).
If I set a piece of hardie backer type board up on the beams as a water shed, will it stand up to water ok?

Cement board in general is not waterproof. It'll stand up to the weather pretty well but could become saturated with water and "weep" through.
A common misconception is that Hardi backer board can be used everywhere. Actually the James Hardi Co. states it in their literature that it is to be used for interior applications only. I'll grant you it is not on the front page in big bold type, but it is there. All CBU's are not waterproof and will wick water. Try something along the waterproof membrane lines if you don't have to penetrate it.
