Hi everyone. I am replacing board and batten siding with 4′ by 10′ Hardie panels with wood battens. The wall now has 5/8″ by 6″ horizontal strapping over foam. I am planning on putting 1/2″ plywood over the strapping , felt then the hardiepanels. Because I only have 1 1/8″ of wood( 5/8″ plus 1/2″) I feel srews would be better. Any suggestions or type of screw to use? Thank you.

McFeely's has stainless square-drive screws for this application in 1-5/8 inch and 2-1/4 inch lengths. They have what they call a nib on the underside of the screw head which supposedly helps cut a countersink and bring the screw flush with the siding surface. I used these in an application similar to yours. They worked okay, but the going was slow, and they're pretty expensive.
I attached my hardi sheet with the underlayment screws. I then shot in the thinner miratec (would that be the board or batten?) with SS #8 nails.

Look, just send me to my drawer. This whole talking-to-you thing is like double punishment.
I have not used screws to hang their siding but i have put up a ton of hardi, nails would not be an issue in your application.
I think they allow direct nailing to 7/16" osb, you have double that, I like to use my roofing nailer, works great.
Even if you nailed 12" o.c you would still be way ahead on time and the cost of screws.
We did my son's house with hardi and used R4 GRKfasteners 8x1 1/4 and very happy with the application
Like another poster said, I would gun nail with roofers (I am pretty sure that is a correct application for hardi sheets but check first) and hide the nails with your battens. That is what I did when I last applied that way.
Used azek battens. Wanted thin so bought 3/8" azek sheets and ripped the battens. Bit more work but turned out great.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
