I’m a home owner in Madison N. H. I built my home about 6 yr. ago. I’m now ready to install the hardwood floor on a raidient heating system. My problems this… I stalled 5/8 t&g plywood on the 2×12 floor joist then installed 1/4 in. lauwn (spl?) plywood (glued and screwed) Now I’m told that the lauwn plywood is not compatable with the heating system and needs to be removed, IT’S GLUED !
The hardwood flooring is Preveco 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ prefinished. red oak
Can I leave the lauwn plywood if I drill some 2″ or 3″ though the subfloor into the headed cavity?
I don’t want to try to tear-up the lauwn plywood.
Got any Ideas?
Thank You, Dave Davis

Where is the radiant heat? Under the 5/8 ply? Are you planning on glue or nail installation?

exactly what is supposed to be the problem with the luan?

Though I am not a fan of luaun plywood for a subfloor application (I have seen too many tile/vinyl flooring kitchen floors with problems), the main problem with the luaun is that it is thin and has interior glue. Since you presumably have it well glued to the subfloor and are installing a wood floor over this, I think it will work well enough. The fact that you have a radiant heat floor should have a negligible effect on the floor system.
I have heard of the oils resins or something in lauan plywood not taking glue well. it also might move a lot with the radiant heat.
