Hi All. My sister and brother-on-law are having a family room addition built onto the rear of their home (all framing and subfloor is complete). The new room will open to an existing family room. They want to put hardwood down over the entire space. (Current FR has carpet over subfloor.)
The flooring guy just came out and pointed out that the joists for the new space and those in the existing room are perpendicular, thus complicating his job. Each of the new and old rooms is apprx. 16 x 16. I suggested going diagonal with the HW, but they don’t want that.
Is there a reasonable way to make this work (aside from asking the GC to rebuild the deck? (FWIW-There is a crawlspace beneath the new floor.)
Thanks.

If the sub floor is adequate (3/4 T&G Plywood) hardwood should be fine run in either direction.

Do not try this at home!

The greater concern I have when choosing the grain direction of the flooring is the incoming light and length of the room. With 3/4"T&g subfloor, it makes no difference which way the joists lie.
Excellence is its own reward!
Thanks guys. I didn't examine the new space, but I think the GC put down OSB sub-floor. I'll pass on your suggestions. Many thanks as always.
How about laying at 45?
