Hi gang, first timer here. Been lurking here awhile but enjoy all of the great ideas and help I see here.
I’m building a home in Fla. – all slabs here- with conventional T&G hardwood flooring that we’ll be making. The slab will have 6 mil vapor barrier beneath it. I,m planning on nailing plywood over the slab to give me something to nail the flooring into. Should I put another layer of plastic under the plywood? I,m thinking if it isn,t need, I could use construction adhesive on the ply too. How thick plywood is needed for flooring nails? Thanks in advance.

Welcome Jeff. I used two layers of 1/2" CDX into which the 3/4" T&G birch was toenailed. Construction adhesive below each layer of plywood. No poly since my slab is radiant and moisture isn't a problem. Double check your nail length at a toenailing angle before proceeding. JLC had an article on this about 2 years ago. "flooring that we'll be making" - do you know how to get the moisture content down and how to check it? The drier you can get it, the smaller the gaps will in the winter. -David
*Thanks David,I'm not familiar with JLC. Is this a magazine? The material I'm making the floor with is Yellow Poplar. I used it before for a floor and really like it. Some people think it it too soft but i've not found that to be a problem. I stained it dark walnut with a poly satin varnish. The lumber is kiln dried and has been stored for several years in my shop but your idea to check the moisture content is a good one. I've been looking @ those moisture meters. Also, how did you attach the plywood? Nails ,screws...Thanks again. Jeff
*Jepetto, I posted the plywood on slab method approved by the national wood floor assoc. on jlconline.com under finished carpentery w/ Gary Katz. About 15 posts down the page. It works.
*Thanks for the info and the link. Been in cabinet business 20 yrs. and never heard of JLC .Thanks, Jeff
