Any idea what to charge? I’ve never tried to give a flat bid on something like this.

How many hours will it take?
Take a trip to a nearby Home Depot or Lowes. Go to the flooring department, and look for the price that they charge for installing that kind of flooring.
Then be gracious to your customer, and tell them that you'll beat that price by 10%.
(Note that when home centers charge for this type of installation, their installers get half -- maybe a bit less -- of what the customer is charged. So, even with the 10% cut, you'll make money.)
The sub price around here is about 2.25-3.00 depending on the floor. The thing I am not familiar with is the stairs, the winders especially. Never done hardwood on them.
That's some forked up thinking if I ever heard it. What kind of idjit is going to let the competition set his prices?!!!IF I did think along those lines, I'd be saying I'll give you a break and only charge ten percent more than the HD pricing.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Hey catfish,
My specialties include both so I'll share my pricing...
300 ft 3/4 maple on 2nd floor to match existing
the rate starts at 2.50 sq. ' but I know i can't make money at that price...I start there and add transitions, flush vents, 2nd floor haul
etc. I usually end up at around 5.00 and my reputation helps to sell the job.
I also include the following at the end of my proposal to help enlighten my customers:
• The best service in the industry.
• Professional installation with attention to detail.
• Work areas are always safe, tidy and as clean as possible.
• We take care of your home like our own home.
Treads can be a real PITA and labour intensive. I always work out an excel sheet and usually do a low and high take. Then I meld in how badly I want the job and set my price...but includes 50./hr. plus 35%
markup minimum...50% for a real PITA
hope this helps...I've attached an excel sheet from a job I recently priced. I try to create the entire project in excel and price it all out...
