I have several delaminations of polyurethane on my mesquite kitchen floor. They were caused by tilting a fridge. . . . the corners dented the wood and the seven coats of poly came loose leaving a yellowish spot. Any thoughts on the best way to fix this?
I’m thinking: sand down to bare wood; spot poly several coats; light sand entire floor then a couple coats over the entire floor. . . . . ?

If it is confined to a small area, couldn't you sand just that area, feather it out a bit and then use a spray lacquer?
For poly to delaminate like that is a little scary though. What's to say it would not happen on the rest later? Was the floor scuffed between coats when originally applied?
sounds to me like you didn't prep. between coats properly. IMO you've applied to many coats, but that's a different topic.
Feather in the damaged area (by sanding), no need to go back to bare wood, and apply several coats to build back the level, being sure to prep. between coats as recommended.
proper prep. is the key to success

Is this a prefinished floor or something? Seven coats is abnormal and generally not as good as four coats, which could be opart of the reason you have delam problems. Wanna say more about how this came to be, under what conditions seven freakin' layers were applied?!

The sufaces were properly prepared. I originally (a few years ago) put four coats on the floor but I was having problems with very small "bumps" in the finish after each coat. I consulted guys on this board and it was agreed that I was doing everything right. It was nothing you could really see but could feel as you sweep your hand accross the floor after every coat. So, in trying to get a smooth coat I put five.
At this point I need to explain that this is a house that I've been working on for several years, see: http://www.geocities.com/annajo1009/ We've done a lot of work and had a lot of traffic since the floors were done (we had a masonary fireplace installed on an interior wall that wasn't originally planned. . . at this time) so I had two more coats put on earlier this year.
The delamination was caused by tilting a heavy fridge, putting all it's weight on two feet and making a small dent in the mesquite. I think I will sand, feather the edges, recoat. I appreciate the help.xpayroll
