I have been told by both the floor sanders, and the tile guys that they have aways seen hardwood floor butted right to a slate or tile boarder. The slate is one run around the prerimeter of living room/kitchen, 30′ X 16′ Slate 1′ X 2′, on 3/8 underlay. Sub is 3/4″ ply. The hardwood will run 4 runs around this slate, then fill in.
So…you all know my question…what would you do…butt it, or leave an expansion gap…and fill it with what? Caulking? Grout would crack with expansion.
I would like to butt it to the slate, for the appearance…but………………..
Thanks in advance!

Newf,
I use a sanded caulk the same width and color as grout. Please post some pics when you're done.

Ok, but what about the wood expansion? I would not think the grout would give any.
Excuse me, Sanded Chaulk. Interesting.
available at most every tile store ....and all our local HD's and Lowes carry it too in the tile section.

Try this site for some tile edging. Haven't used any yet ...but have seen samples.
In their "products" section of the site ...they'll explain the different stuf they offer.
I know my local tile shop..as well as HD can special order what ever I want.
Probably available somewhere kinda/sorta local to ya.
They make stuff specifically to hide/absorb any materials movement.
Looks like a cool project.

How wide is the flooring? A pretty good rule of thumb used in the furniture industry is that hardwoods will move about 2% of their width....agree the wood is probably at it's max now, so take the width, figure out what 2% is (to be generous), divide that in two (those inside courses will be face nailed in the centre I'm assuming), and that'll give you an estimation of the size of the crack that might show up there.
I'm sure you guys acclimated the material, but bear in mind that the m.c ranges for the rest of Canada don't work their....Arcitectural Woodwork Institute has a map of m.c ranges for different parts of the continent....all the texts say "6-8% m.c", but they don't allow for regional differences....the AWI chart does, and allows at least 8-10% for Newf. and Cape Breton, and it might be higher, I'll have to check. So even given central heating, that wood is not going to go back down to the size it was at 6%, is my bet.
Saw Kelly at the Farmers market; lord, the men swarming around her. Adrian,
I creep around the clients house with my moisture meter stabbing furniture while their backs are turned. That's what I use as a guide for flooring or cabinets.
Newf,
Don't forget to post pic of Kelly too. (g)

Owner and Tile guys desided on just a grout line. i said good luck! Kinda out of my hands. But as the wood was at it's max...we all felt it would only get smaller. The owner said if the grout cracks, he will remove it, and use the right caulking.
I'm only the carpenter! What do I know? LOL
Thanks again for the advice.
Take care

Thanks for the reply. But what happens if it does expand?
Does the sanded caulking get pushed upward? Is it attractive enough to be in a living room? This slate boarded goes zig zag, all around the perimeter of the living room, a 3' X 4' slated spot in front of a door, and around a kitchen Island. Around the slate is going to be 4 runs of oak border, then oak infill in the field. Now a border defies all laws of expansion, to begin with...It boxes in the field, which is fine length wise, but across grain...I have never had a call back, but I have never seen if the miterd corners all serprate. and I would think that the wood is at it's max. size now...it was 6 % M.C., but it has been humid and hot...in the 80's...
I'm thinking now I might try a moulding attached to the oak, floating over the expansion space and over the slate, glued to the oak, but just caulked or siliconed to the tile.
Any problems with this, or would the sanded caulking be just as good, or as attractive?
Thanks, again...
And of course I'll post pix!

Newf,
The sanded caulk matches the grout you use for the slate, looks just like it. It allows the wood to expand without cracking a grout line. I guess it moves up but I could not tell. I use this when wood flooring meets tile or stone flooring.
Wow!, 6%. Steel doesn't get down to 6% on the bayou.
KK
Thanks! If we can find it on the Rock, we will use it! This is the end of the line , befor England, so....Hehehe
Yeah, 6% before the weather hit...but We think it is at it's max size so...
This is the layout...outside border, slate, 4 runs of oak around perimeter, then oak infill.I Lubs angles!

Again, thanks!
