Hardwood prep: low spot in subfloor
Helping a friend doing hardwood floor today and tomorrow. He has a bay window that was an add-on (40 yr old house) and the subfloor has sagged slightly on either side of the original wall line. The flooring is running parallel to the wall and perpendicular to the joists. The subfloor slopes to a lowest point of 3/8″ low in the bay window over a distance of 30″. The flooring is pre-stained solid 3/4″ tropical of some kind, I can’t pronounce the name let alone spell it.
My friend was planning to use self-levelling compound to fix things up, but I’m pretty sure it will just shatter when the toe nailer hits it. I was thinking I’d measure and rip tapered shims and glue them to the subfloor along each joist. Anyone got any other solutions?

Shims as a guide and Bondo.

You're right about the leveller shattering from the nails. Shims would be the better way. I have heard that some people use strips of 30# fel;t paper as shims.

Thanks guys. I'll get that done today while buddy and his DW are laying more flooring. They should be able to complete the rest of the project themselves.Lignum est bonum.
