Hardwood Refinishing (top nailed oak)
Hello all,
I want to refinish a top nailed oak floor. I also want to tint it slightly darker. One issue that I am perplexed with is I have several small cracks, nail holes, etc… I have read where someone used a trowel once the inital cleaning has been performed to fill the holes and then starts the sanding process. But if I want to stain the oak the filler will not absorb the stain will it? The other steps would be sanding with 40 grit at 15 degress, then 60 parallel, 100, and 120.
Any other tips or suggestions? Dennis

i did a badly damged oak flor once. so bad i was like it's gotta go,but it was a deal of try it if it don't work we'll throw carpet on it. this floor had 100's of places that were 1/8x3/8 holes [to tell you what happen ,someone nail a second prefinish floor on top of this. all the holes are from the nails being pulled] and probably 2 dozen that were a inch long.
first i hit the floor with a 16 grit orbital sander and got the floor cleaned, then trowel the filler on and sanded from there. now when it was done i can look at the fill marks and see them, but most people wouldn't even see them and if they did it just looks like 1/4 sawn grain.
now depending on how dark you go i don't think it would be a problem. you might just grab a old borad in the shop and dril some holes, and scar it up then use the filler on it and see how it looks. remember when finishing,it's a floor not your dining room table, a few "bad" spots here and there are patina.
i will say this on a top nailed floor,EMPTY THE DUST BAG OFTEN AND AT NIGHT !!!! i would guess you will get lots of sparks in the dust bag. larry
