I am working on a home built in early 1900s brink frame house. I am using furring strips and 3/16 drill bit. Tapcon screws. The issue I am having is that the motor and brick are crumbling and very hard to attach to. any ideas? Home Homeowner doesn’t want to rip out bricks.

Here's what I did when working on an 1886 vintage store. Plenty of brick in the 3 or 4 course dimising walls on this block. However, like you found-the morter was as shattering as the brick was soft.
I contacted Hilti and while I was initially trying to use shot and nails-they tipped and supplied me with these-a drive in anchor of sorts. Plastic sleeve and nail expander. You bored out the proper hole in the furring and then used a masonry bit to drill out your choice-either morter or brick-whichever held the anchor better.
Need sized according to the thickness of the furring.

In those cases I use the smaller size tapcons and a slightly oversized drill bit. I can't remember exactly, but it's something like 1/32" larger than the normal size bit.
