HD might add convenience stores

MikeS | Posted in General Discussion on June 30, 2005 12:08pm

I heard on the radio that HD is considering selling gas and some convenience store items at some of its stores.

HD heard that selling gas is profitable for Costco stores and apparently thought why can’t we do the same thing.

I had a bad day at the supply houses today and Home Depot saved my butt. So I like em.

Looking for mercury vapor bulbs. Three big supply houses in my area didn't have the bulb. Well maybe the last one (Graybar) did but After waiting at the counter for fifteen minutes with no one offering to help me, I left and went to home Depot. I was trying to avoid a twenty minute ride to HD but I guess I had no choice. They were two busy setting up a free lunch for counter days. 10:30 in the morning and they have one counter guy. The other two are busy trying to get the grills working and fussing over food tables. The outside salesman is wondering around the store chitchatting on his cell phone. Three of us at the counter waiting to served.

I have much better luck at tHome Depot and Lowes.

Our Lowes and Home Depot didn't have mercury vapor bulbs.I got my MV bulb at Coast to Coast Hardware.I really like the amount of light these things give. And they are hugely cheapo to run compared to the sodium lights. The Lowes has had a hotdog/bratwurst/coffee/refreshments cantina just inside the exit door for as long as they have been open. Nada at HD...

        Are we there yet ?

Naw, it's the PFK, who says, "We're outta the reg'lar, but we gots this 'ere die-sel stuff thas jus as gud . . ."

Actually, I still find it funny.  The original costco/sams business model for the heavily discounted spot-bought gas was predicated on a zero labor cost,; no attendant at all.  Drive offs and a requirement for attendants for ADA compliance puts the kibosh on that.  I've noticed that sams/wally world are "up" on how low they once were, and I've supposed that's to provide the labor.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

Maybe 4-5 years ago a HD in Annapolis had a kinda of upscale coffee bar at the "contractors" doorway, it didn't last too long.

I'm waiting for Lowes to counter with a BREW THRU where they load cold beer onto your truck with a forklift.

The Chicago HD's sell hotdogs. They're actually pretty good and cheap if you're in a hurry.

      1. RalphWicklund | Jun 30, 2005 07:56am | #17

Jacksonville has a McDonalds on the inside and the hotdog, chips and soda cart out in the parking lot. Lowe's has the big hotdog, hamburger, chips and soda truck on the outside by the main entrance and the free coffee just inside the contractor's pickup door.

          Mr T.

Obviously, you've never had a real Chicago dog. Once you have them made right, it's hard to go back to Oscar Mayer in a stale bun.

There is a little gas station/eatery in the Canyonlands of Utah, that had a large billboard out front that said,Eat here and get gas!

The Grand Rapids, MI based Meijer chain of stores (they're all like an upmarket Wal-Mart hyperstore) puts a gas station with convenience store out front on most of their properties.

The ones near me have cut flowers (boquets?) in the checkout lines. The cashiergirl said they were selling well.

They need to do something - it is one of the more INCONVENIENT stores in town.

    Convenience:

    1. Have standard items in stock

    2. Don't put returned/broken items back on the shelf

    3. Carry name brands tools, equipment and lighting that are not unique to HD.  It would be nice to get parts and have some confidence it will be produced for longer than two weeks.

    4. Staff the check out stands

    5. Answer the phone

    6. Hire helpful personnel - I don't care if they are not experts, that is not expected, but willing to get something down, or restock a bin, without an attitude is needed.

Master the above list first, then go find new ways to make money.
