My old code book only lists header spans 20′ or greater.
I have a 12′-6″ header span for 2×8 rafters spanning an 8′ run (8:12 pitch, not that it matters), in CT so snow loads are minimal. Will be using triple trimmers (so actual header length will be 13′-3″). Minimum header size, assuming your standard double 2x header? Doug Fir mat’l to be specific.
PS: Not to mistrust or second guess the boss, but:
Will be running 20′ 2×8 rafters on same 8:12 pitch. At square cut upper end of said rafter gussetting 4′ long pieces of 1/2″ OSB on both sides of the rafter and continuing diagonally about another 4′ until load bearing wall comes into picture.
Plan is to run 2×4 horizontally under joints and then purlins down from said horizontal 2×4 at about 15* angle to load bearing wall below.
Kosher?
Let’s not confuse the issue with facts!

12'6" wide opening? Sounds like you need LVLs and a PE. Unless maybe you can fit a triple 2x12 in there, but it depends on how wide the building is, etc, so still can't say from here. Also my guess would be 4 "trimmers" for each side of a 3" thick header.
