We’ll be reroofing this year, in a very warm area. Does anybody know a source of info about how much of the sun’s heat is absorbed by the various roofing materials? For instance, would it be a good idea to use unpainted metal? After all, it is quite reflective — at least in the visible spectrum. For another instance, how do comp shingles and metal compare in heat gain?

Metal would be the better choice, not only for the heat but the time you will get from the roof. All of the warmer region's tend to use alternatives to shingles. Another good option would be slate or clay.
