Another major problem on this slate roof with large open overhangs and not enough insulation in the right places.
An ex Fireman cleans the snow off somewhat for this couple but doesn’t go far enough. I looked in the two stage attic and it’s woefully lacking in good insulation.
Started trying to free up the ice deposits with magnesium chloride flakes and my roof rake as a hatchet.
I’m ashamed to say I didn’t bring any 5 er’s with me and had to pay $2.98 for a Homer orange one. Shoot me Rez!!

I'll be quoting to completely redo this slate and copper on this North facing pitch.
I'll strip and salvage all the slates I can -- perhaps 60% are re usable. These are narrow slates 8" x14" long with only 2" headlap.
I'll take off the 16 oz. copper aprons that are joined by drive cleats -- like ductwork ! I'll fabricate SS panels of 20 oz. copper to install that are 3' tall eliminating the need for the lower two slate courses.
I will Grace this whole roof up to where the dormer valleys dump onto the main roof plane then 30 lb. above that.
I'll relay the slates with a 3 " headlap using the 8" wides on the wings and furishing 10" x 14" of the same color to work up the middle area between the dormers. I'll use 12" x 14" to slate in the dormers.
An added bonus for the SS panels is that in future years if there is snow removal to be done I can clamp some locking seamers onto the ribs and put a plank on them to make access to the roof easier and safer.
