DW came on and pointed out that it felt warm. Checked t-stat and it was, demanding ac but not on. Turned fan to on and nothing.
Pulled d/c and opened up, fan turned ok, noticed an automotive type 5amp fuse toasted. Replaced it, closed up and turned on breakers, after the built-in delay fan ran for a minute or so. Then it quit. Checked for voltage on secondary of t-fromer and got nothing, judging from smell guess it is toast, right at 8 yrs old. Guess it is cooking 24/7/365.25.
Will go get one tomorrow, does that sound like it or could that be just one of the problems and caused by something else bad? Now is not the time to get someone to come out very soon.

Have had a 24 vac xfmr like that fail also after 5 years.
The specific failure cause of mine was that it had been improperly varnished/baked and the magnetic forces caused movement of the coil and eventually wore thru the insulation in one place.
Made sure the replacement would last by vacuum impregnating and baking the next one myself<G> That one has been going over 20 years.
Thanks, don't think I will go that far to work over the new one. I would bet money that there is a replacement either in my basement left over from my dad or in MIL's basement left over from my FIL who fixed about anything that refrigerates. Could drive to the next state and buy one before I could find it though(:-).
Well problem solved. Picked up replacement xfmr, got sage advice from BIL's biker buddy HVAC owner. Came home and installed and proceeded in really smoking this one. Laurel and Hardy do heat pump repair.
Turns out has a wire that goes to the reversing valve rubbing on a refridgerant line. Had I found that before the comedy below it would have been a zero $ fix.
Last night when I saw the blown 5 amp fuse I went to the truck and grabbed a couple, Have you ever noticed how close in color the 5 amp and 20 amp are? Installed the new one, put in the disconnect and waited (turns out there is no delay on fan).
I had the original thermostat that came with the unit in a plastic bag on top of the air handler and had just moved it, you know how they kind of rustle on their own after you wad them? Chuckled and said that is not sizzle, just the bag. Copious smoke begins to boil from $30 transformer.
Notice the fuse did not go, look at it (20 amp) and then at the not economy size bucket of dumb azz I had just kicked over. Probably killed the original transformer last night, darn 5 amp fuse did it's job valiantly
Friendly True Value had replacement #2 for $19.95. Repaired wires, put in new and starting to cool down.
Will hasten process with liberal dose of frozen Margaritas.
Will hasten process with liberal dose of frozen Margaritas.
Stayed at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque last night (Embassy has a free dirnk happy hour) and had a few Margaritas myself.
Thanks for the update,
so, was vibration like I said (G) only farther away.......
The second one was encased in steel by the way. We used to try to stay at those, even if they were more than the Army per diem, would make it up in drink and food.
Former employer and friend's former partner owned a couple of those as well as about 135 Pizza Huts and 35 or so Rent-a-centers.
