OK….here’s the scenario.
A friend owns an old home that is actually a “side by side duplex” w/ an apartment in the rear. Currently has one oil fired boiler (165000 btu) w/a hot water coil. The whole house is on one zone (not a prob now, since he lives on one side, and his elderly mom on the other).
He needs to redo the heating system for the following reasons.
1. Wants to convert to gas so as to have a more trouble free delivery, and also wants a gas stove in his kit.
2. Wants to do three separate furnaces, and three separate hot water sources, since he foresees that both he and his mom will be moving, and wants to rent out both sides of the duplex, in addition to the rear apt.
Util co has already brought the gas line to the side of the house, and installed three gas meters.
I recommended an acquaintance of mine that does “boiler work” and he reviewed the job with us.
Scope of work is as follows.
1. Pipe in and hook up gas lines to three new gas boilers w/ 40 Gal boiler mates (total run is about 16′ to all three boilers)
2. Hook all new units into adjacent flue (about 6-8′), and line said flue.
3. Re-plumb heat system (all accessible in basement) so as to split out the three “zones”. Currently a continuos loop……basement is about 40′ X 30′.
4. Split hot water supplies to the individual boilers (about 90′ of copper pipe to run)
Bid: 3 boilers w/ 40 gal boiler mates = $8,041
Misc. fittings = $700, Copper pipe = $1,500, Gas pipe = $1,200, Flue pipe = $475
Labor = $10,869……Total = $23,785
Now gentlemen…..your thoughts?????

helped my plumber FIL R&R two furnaces, took the two of us less than a day to replace the furnacs, one oil, one gas. gas requird cutting and threading balck pipe. replacing a waterheater takes about 2 hours.
my guess on parts, prices don't look out of line (except maybe black pipe, but I haven't bought any lately)
don't know about putting in flue pipes
my guess 3-5 days to do work for 2 people

Not knowing the capacity or type of boilers, seems very reasonable. If price is more important than quality, there's always someone willing to do it cheaper. Get more bids.
