Hello Folks… I’m new here… I used to hang out at Badger Pond… alas, it is no more. I’m a fully qualified tool junkie (I had to buy the house next door to put it all in!) and a pretty good sawdust maker (of course, I had to get old as dirt to ever aquire the skils). I build furniture, some cabinet work, and renovate historic homes for a living down here in backwoods Florida near the Suwannee River. Just thought I’d say hi…

How do you feel about Tyvek vs felt.

...replaced a lot more felt than tyvec in residing houses. I like the stuff. I'm doing a house now with tyvec housewrap... Having a hard time finding cedar shingles down here in Florida though. And OUCH what a price they want for 'em!
Ask around here somebody will know something to help ya out...

The question isn`t whether the "house wrap" is in need of replacement....but rather which provides better protection against a need to replace the house?
Strike one.......you admit to using drywall screws to hang cabinetry and yer in big trouble!

Hmmmmm... OK, I admit to having bought DuPonts claim that Tyvek allows the house to "breathe" as in the vapor can escape through the product... So I usually use it. I have never seen any useful data on felt as far as it's allowing moisture to escape? I have used felt behind cedar shingle siding in the past. I even went so far as to use a base layer of felt, on a beach house... then lapped another layer of felt over the unexposed area of each course of shingles. That job has held up for over 20 years, so far.
"Jiving with the regulars" may not be my strong suit. But, finding creative solutions to problems usually is...

Welcome, neighbor ! I'm in Southwest Georgia about 70 miles North of the Florida line and Lake Seminole. Not many folks here from our neck of the woods. These guys use funny words like " eaves trough " and such. Most of them don't know about grits ! Can you believe that ?
DON'T fall into the trap of their questions about the black diamonds on your tape measure. The drywall screw thing is an inside joke - you'll catch on soon.
There are some great people here and I've made friends and learned a lot. Hope to see you around !

Hey Brick-
Welcome to a new guy froma relatively new guy. I have been aboard for about seven months and admit to lurking around mostly looking and reading. I do enjoy all the info a person can get and look forward to getting to know most everyone more. Again, welcome.
I don't think anyone has mentioned wondering about your political stance on all the hot issues. Maybe that is another topic to sort of ride the rails on for a while! Also, I enjoy renovations as much as the next guy and love seeing before and after pictures!

Shoot... I eat at Waffle House and Huddle House too... He!!, I got to... they are some of my best customers. But my Doc says to quit it... It's gonna kill me. Course, I DID have a heart attack a year 'n a half ago... He may have something there. So now I'm on $450. a month worth of meds... I did hafta tell most of my customers I was going to have to do a "cost of living" increase in what I charge... LITERALLY! These days I do try to stay off 40 foot ladders and steep roofs; I hire young bucks for that stuff. Funny thing is... It has actually forced me to make changes that have made my business even better. He!!ofa way to learn though.
Darn right I eat grits! I took some to Australia a few years ago on a vacation. When they insisted I try Vegamite... I countered with grits. They still won. Vegamite is HORRIBLE STUFF! About like mixing axel grease, peanut butter and salt in equal parts... And they eat this sh!t. They sure got better beer than we do though... Coopers ale is the best.
And Greg... we'll hafta meet sometime... How far are you from Tally?
I don't think anybody is ever going to solve the Tyvek vs: Felt quandry... It just depends on what your doin... I guess.
I got strong openions about politicks 'n religion too... Don't care much for either. Not a big fan of Bill Gates, Walmart, Lowes/Home depots, rich greedy oil tycoons or Nancy Sinatra either... Then there is our soon-to-be President, Hillary: http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v246/brickspix/hclinton.jpg (this is her without makeup).
And yeah... Ima coffee addict. Got a 24 ounce insulated cup that goes with me everywhere.
And just in case I havent told y'all enough to make you puke... I'm also a computer geek... been buildin 'em and usin 'em about 20 years or so (mostly as a hobby these days... used to own a printing/graphics business) http://techwizardcomputers.com

Insulation? Around the home place I just use all the styrofoam peanuts I get with all the computer stuff I buy... attic's full of 'em! I don't try to sell this "high-tech" solution to my customers though. :)

Hey, you got some of the old Insul-Brick asphalt impregnated fiberboard on the side of yer house!
Be careful taking it down 'cause it's museum quality stuff anymore ;o)

Thanks Kevin... Seems like a very "real" bunch of guys. I think I'm gonna like it here too. And, even at "pushin 60" I'm not afraid to learn something. There is nothing like asking guys who "been there" when you got a problem. Now... If I could just find cedar shingles down here in the south for less than $250. a square? $560 shipping for 16 sq equals $35 shipping per square.
$130 + $35 = $165 per square, shipping included...for 16 sq.
Cool deal... It seems Lloyd Clefstad at WoodRoof.com had already solved my problem... Great prices:
"If you use a #2 Grade 18" Perfection shingle @ 7" exposure, you will net out at $77.95 per 100 sq ft (7" div 5-1/2" * 100 = 127% coverage)#2 Grade shingles prices are currently higher than they should be due to a shortage in the market. I always consider a #1 shingles better value in the long run, and especially now with the high price of #2s".
"I estimate that you will need 2 pallets to cover all your needs.
Freight rates currently rising due to fuel costs and an overall shortage of trucks. We just had some shingles depart today for Tallahassee. We ship often to Jacksonville and Miami. Shipping should come in about $400 per pallet."
"I hope you will find this information helpful."
Many thanks and best regards,
Lloyd Clefstad --- BRICK
"They say that there is a fine line between genius and insanity. I like to color outside the lines...and then eat the crayons." ~ Me
Brick, My shipping was 280.00 per pallet..whew! it went up.
I have no.1 perfections (blue lable) wont even consider no.2 ,too much waste and hassel ( I have to warrent this roof), and they go up at 5.5 to the weather NOT 7..maybe on a wall 7 is ok, but not on a roof. Even the lable says 5.5..to be warrented.
Figure 4 bdles. a Sq.
If they get the trucking ironed out, I'll be needinf ANOTHER 20+ sq. soon..the rest of the roof is shot too..he just don't know it yet.
If ya don't use skip sheathing/lath..the cedar breather is 100.00 for 2 sq. with shipping..UPS in this case.
Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Well... The thing here is, I have to match the exposure pretty close to what.s there... It is wall application though. If I get shingles that are too short, I can always use my old trick of adding a strip of felt to each course. I think it is a pretty good idea anyway... Just takes some more time. It does haveskip sheathing/lath... 1 x 4's on about 7 1/2" centers.

you should be able to cheat that ...on a wall.
Other wise I'd be shopping for 24's..and there goes the price ^ ll
I think the 24'' royals were 177.00 plus shipping..YIKES. The roof I am on now is OAK shakes, 24'' with 12 to the weather..and about 6-8..8d and 10d nails in each one..it is hell.
good luck..

Some things many of you will never understand . . . . sigh . . . . grits are as much a staple at my house as sugar and flour and milk. We took the Boy Scouts camping last month and someone FORGOT THE GRITS. We don't EVER run to town for gear - you forget your sleeping bag, you sleep on the ground - but for this event, we went to town. Our boys all love grits, and you can feed the whole Troop for $1.29 ! Wife like sugar on hers, but she's a Yankee, from North Georgia. Me, I like 'em pure and unadulterated - butter and salt.
Brick, I'm North of Albany, Ga and my farm is in Colquitt - only about 60 miles from Tallahassee. Last fall, I drove my Mom to Tally airport and my son and I had just come out of the woods, deer hunting. I was heading into the terminal when I realized I had two .30/30 shells in my pocket ! Rather than walk all the way back to the car, I ditched them in a flower bed and picked them up when we left ! If my plan hadn't worked, you might have seen me in the paper !

Advice from Big Brother Mongo?
For your first two weeks here, avoid questions about felt vs tyvek (too late), vented vs non-vented roofs, and Yankees vs Red Sox.
And don't try to post more than piffin.
C'mon, Dont you know Stienbrenner secretly owns the red sox?
"C'mon, Dont you know Stienbrenner secretly owns the red sox?"
I though that ridiculous until I thought a little more:
1) Steinbrenner owns race horses.
2) John Henry is a race horse.
3) John Henry owns the Red Sox.
Dang...you may be on to something there...
Doesn't George Steinbrenner own Lowe's? And, I thought John Henry drove railroad spikes? I guess I'm just out of the loop these days... Don't know nuthin? --- BRICK

Hi Greg...
Nice to hear from you... Yeah, I get to Valdosta fairly often, Is the nearest Home Despot store for me. I sorta have family up there too... J. B. Judd came close to being my step-father many years ago... My mom dated him about ten years. We're still close friends. Mom passed away in '95... too damn young. It is rare to find guys doing good old fashioned carpentry work any more. On the other hand, I have no competition here at all... nice. I pretty much get to pick and choose the jobs I want to do... for folks that can afford me. We ought to meet for coffee sometime...

For some reasson, I'm just now finding this thread and suprised at how many responses already. Now, having read it, I know why. I can't say when I have felt so excited (well, maybe that's too strong a word) about a newbie here. You are a classic! Use whatever you want under your siding. Just make sure the shingles are blue lable. Reds are a waste of material and labour.
And don't use piffin screws to put them up.
