Hi,
I’m a home owner that is having a new roof installed on a 1931 bunglow in Chicago. The contract calls for Ice & water shield on the low slope (2 1/2:12) octagon bay under the shingles. I just got home and the contractor has used MIRaDri 100 with a granular surface (looks like roll roofing) on the bay. He has a roll of the other membrane on site. The MIRaDRi is much thinner. Is this a problem. Should I make him remove the MIRaDRi and install the Ice & Watersheild. I have meeting with him tomarrow and any help would be great.
Thanks

Ice and water shield is a _substrate_ used below an additional layer of roofing material. Its granular finish does not thereby make it a primary roofing material.
I do not know what MIRaDRY 100 is. Since th slope of your roof is quite low, you need some kind of a roof membrane that provides continuous,non-interrupted coverage. There are many products on the market, including torch-down (heat applied) versions.
I have had success in laying down Ice and Water Shield on the BARE roof deck first. Then I install a layer of 60# substrate (for torch-down roofing material) on top. Over this I apply any metal edges (they need to be heavy-duty galv. steel; able to withstand heat). These are primed, and only then is a torch-down membrane applied.Make sure there is a good seal between metal edges and the roofing material.
Whatever you do,insist you roofer follow manufacturer's specs!...else the material warranty is void!

Ice & Water Shield,FrostGaurd,Etc.are terms that are now often used Generically,Much like Kleenex.I haven't used the Product from Grace for years because I found it to be extemely slippery and therefor dangerous in many rooftop situations. There are many other products available with a granular coating which are meant to prevent your Roofer ending up a Quadraplegic. This is prob.the reason for the "switch".
