You've removed the inside and outside handles?? Then you should be able to simply reach in the hole and pull the bolt back. Or slip one handle part way in so you can turn the bolt back.

Do what everyone else does. Put all the parts back in the box and take it back to HD and tell them you didn't need it.
Then some other fool will figger he broke it when he gets it home.
At least that's what seems to happen to me when I get these things from the Orange Borg.
If removing the hinge pins doesn't work and all else fails, saw through the bolt with a hack saw blade. thats what a lock smith would probably do. I know, because my father is one.
Cutting the bold with a hacksaw is not likely. Even if you could get a hacksaw in there, the bolt is hardened steel or has a hardened steep pin in it. Removing the hinge pins may or may not work. Some entry doors have security hinges - one flap of the hinge has a small tab that fits into a hole in the other hinge when the door is closed, thus preventing you from removing the door from the hinge side.
You should be able to turn the lock with a screwdriver.

It works. Infact, I have a "special" tool for doing it that consists of two hack saw blades with a rivet in the middle. They act as f scissors and cut through the bolt. It's what it was made for. I agree that cutting through hardened steel is no walk in the park though.
I'll have to remember that. I imagine a brand new blade and one of those little handles that holds just one end of the blade would be the thing to use. Unless, of course, I had that fancy double bladed thing.
I did locksmithing for about 6 months many years ago. Learned to pick, shim, rekey, master key... but all shop work, so didn't learn much about getting in a door.--------------------------------------------------------

When you removed the inside knob, the knob probably has a square spindle attached. Sometimes the spindle is separate, not attached. The spindle went thru the square hole in the latch, place a straight screwdriver in the hole in the latch and turn. The latch will retract and you can start over.

There are several different styles. Some have a square hole. Some have sloted connection. On some the knob shafts are C shaped and it bears on "ears" on the latch bolt.I had a latch bolt fail. And after removing the knobs could not force the bolt to retract.Had to take out the hing pins. And then the knuckles overlapped and I had to force the door to get it out..

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I had to do that once. I've never closed the bathroom door since! :D--------------------------------------------------------

I had that happen a year ago, the ext knob fell off while I was fiddling with it closed, lockset katched, and I couldn't get the bolt released because of friction from a tight fit. Popped the hinge pins and had to shoulder the door off from the outside. Client stood inside in case the door decided to walk.
