Help on designing a staircase

phemt | Posted in General Discussion on August 30, 2004 05:49am

I need some serious help on designing a a staircase that starts in a basement that goes up to the first floor. To begin with, the width is only 30″!

The dimensions are as follows: Height from basement floor to first floor is 96″. The length (from the first floor landing to the exterior wall )  is 146″ The problem is that there is a 33″ door way (on he same wall as the stair stringer) to another room where the stairs should end. Either I can use 113″ as the length (146″-33″) and make steep steps or I can make a small landing and try to put in a door longer than 80″. Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading.

    (13) risers at 7.3846" and (12) 10" treads = 120" would be IRC 2000 code approved but won't work in your case. Also, the 30" width is not code approved. In our city, an ammendment to the code allows a maximum 8" rise and 9" tread. You might want to check your local ammendments for something similar. If you used (13) risers at 7.3846" and (12) 9" treads, that would give you a total run of 108" which appears to work in your situation.

What about the head height? Sometimes going down stairs there is concern for head height. I dont know the min. height off the top of my head? ha ha, that was not meant as a pun.

I read about your router problem, I think someone mentioned the speed control thing, I remember a Bosch router that did the same thing, it was the variable speed control that did it. Somebody in the shop bypassed it? They did something to it, it had no variable speed but it worked again.

I use the 7518 for the big bits. Its a horse.

thanks Doug, I wanted to address it to you, sorta, but didn't wanna step on any toes...ya know?

I like the router, not the eletronics.

        the min. height

If memory serve correctly, it's 84" above any tread--which is supposed to prevent having that smack-you-in-the-head 'bulkhead' on the stairs.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

The IRC requires 6'-8" of clear headroom. This is measured vertically from the imaginary line created all the tread noses.

Thanks for the help. I used your numbers and was able to add an additional 9" by taking ou the entire door frame, as well as the header that was above the door. It all fits now. Thanks,
