I’m looking for some advice on insulating the crawlspace area of my 1 1/2 story 1939-built home.
Typical of most homes in my neighborhood, the center area of my attic is finished and the walls and ceiling of this area are insulated pretty well; R13 in the walls and R19 in the ceiling area. There are plastic baffles running against the roof sheathing to provide about a 1″ air space above the insulation along the sloped portion of the ceiling. Also, the peak and the crawlspace area of the roof are vented with box vents. (only 1.5″ soffits so no vents in this area)
The problem I have is that the crawlspace area only has blown in insulation. Since the floor of this crawlspace is storage area, I am limited to how much insulation I can add. With what little I have, I currently get ice dams.
In the crawlspace area, can I continue the baffles down to the soffit and add a layer of R19 insulation between the roof rafters? This would basically insulate the floor AND ceiling of these triangular storage crawlspaces. Any advice?
