Ok, I have to admit I feel like a real moron here. I am trying to replace a box for this light (it was never attached properly, I am guessing), but I cannot get the damn glass off it.
How does this thing work? Does the glass spin out of the metal ring? It is actually detached from the ceiling already, but only pulls down about 1 inch, so there is no way to get it from above…I am totally stuck here, and I feel like a jackass. View Image

The glass is usually held in place with spring clips. 3 clips are typical. You should be able to simply pry the glass off.
If there are no springs as mentioned above then it usually has a single thread that twists on to three nubs (?knubs). Hold the metal fixture and twist the globe off to the left ( counterclockwise ).
