I am in the process of replacing a portico over my front porch. The porch is about 2 feet off the ground and is poured concrete on a concrete foundation.
The pour was done in a manner that has the water flowing towards the house and I have several rotted trim boards as a current condition. As I started to remove material to see the extent of problem relative to stud and sill I ran into sand between the walls up about 18 inches. While the top portion is dry, as I dug into the sand it got wetter as I went down. On top of this I found that the electrical outlet on the inside of the house is also embedded in this sand.
I am not a contractor, I am the home owner, and with my limited knowledge (mostly from Fine Homebuilding), I assume this is not good for the wood or the electrical connection. I am incorrect in this assumption or has anyone seen this done before?
Any help will be appreciated.
