I was aksed by a customer today who is building a house if he could do this. He’s a good friend and while I have already referred him to the appropriate building inspector, I’d like to try to get him an answer on my own. I’ve attached a picture to try to convey what I’m trying to say. He wants to increase the size of this window by a foot. that means that the w 8×13 beam will sit on top of the window header approximatly 6″ in from the end. The header is a 2×10 box header, and the wall that the window is in is a gable end. There is a small bedroom above this bathroom with 11 7/8″ WI 40 joists that hang off of the beam and run forward over the vanity. There are no joists on the other side of the beam, so the beam only carries ends of the joists on one side for a span of only 6′. The loads that were used were 40 pound floor, 30 poound roof, and 20 pound ceiling if that is at all important. If anyone is familiar with this type of situation, I’d really like to help him out and atleast warn him if it’s not going to work.

engineer I'm not............
I would think that with resizing the header that it would be probable. Most probably need some backup on the calculations. Remind him that the window needs to have tempered glass.
I cannot even figure out from the sketch and the description which window -the one on the top or the RH one (which extended would put the window over the tub (why it would need to be tempered?)
Structurally, anything is doable for the relatively small dimensions and loads given.
code rules- ( why it would need to be tempered?)
A simple guide-any glass within arms reach of a tub/shower needs to be tempered (or I assume-safety glass)-Was interpreted to be 30" from tub locally.
Same with 18" distance from the floor to glass.
The opening on the top of the sketch is a pocket door.
Cant follow your drawing
Please add a bit more detail to show the roof, layout and beam.
Y not simply put a new small (tempered) window in the tub area??
Whenever you start messing with the landing of steel beams, an engineer should be consulted. The window could easily be increased in size if the header can be altered in size or material.
a beam is best in a pocket, running into a wall ,being supported with a jack. most ppl wouldn;t even know it's there. but sometimes things like this are done, and certain rules must be followed. consulting the local building code would be the best.or have a engineer look at the problem.
