Bought an old wood exterior door and I need some advice for preparation:
The oak door is going to be painted, inside and out.
The interior finish was shellac. I scraped most of it off with a carbide scraper and then used lots of alcohol to take the rest off. The exterior finish was some kind of varnish over shellac that had alligatored something fierce. I scraped it off and alcohol is going to take care of the rest.
Should I use anything special for primer considering there may be remnants of shellac left? How about Zinnser B*I*N shellac based primer? Exterior paint is going to be a gloss or semi-gloss latex and interior is going to be a semi-gloss latex.
Also: I need to cut a slot 5/8″ wide x 3/4″ deep in the bottom to fit in a dadoed RCT silicone sweep. What the best way to do that? Stand it up on the table saw and carefully push it through against the fence? Multiple passes with the router and a slot cutter?
Thanks!

I've had good results with BIN, but there are better for exterior use. Any remaining shellac should not interfere with other primers -- it just helps seal things.
I'd cut the slot with a 5/8" spiral router bit. You could even do that in one pass.
If you stand it up on the table saw, can I watch? ;-)

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
