A question for you Quick books Pro users. Do you have to have additonal software to run payroll with the basic package? If not, is there a limit on the number of emoloyees you can enter into the system. Thanks!

I believe QBP has payroll built in. I think it is Quickbooks that does not have payroll.
I think that the payroll deductions are downloded the first time you register. Then they get you every year on updates. We use a payroll service so do not use the updated payroll tables. But still enter time into QBP.
As far as number of employees? I don't think that there is an upper limit? How many you got? I believe the upper limit on names in QBP is around 12-15,000. But this would be customers and jobs too.
So you could have 1000 customers, 10,000 jobs and 2,000 employees (or thereabouts)
Thanks for the info. I was asking on behalf of the wife who does some light booking work for a small telecommunications contractor around tax time. He currently uses Peachtree and has been thinking about going to QB for some time. I told her just to post it to this board and a resident expert would reply.
You don't have to have additional software, but you do 'need' to buy an additional annual subscription from Intuit. They offer 3 levels; we're using the middle level, called 'Enhanced', which costs $200/yr for up to 3 employees. I don't know what the cost is for more employees.
The 'subscription' provides a handy 'wizard' for setting up payroll, and it provides for updates via internet of the tax tables. I think it works quite well.
Regarding 'Need' for this additional subscription - you don't absolutely have to have it - you can set up payroll and do all calculations manually, entering the results into QB, but IMO the $200 is money well spent.
