I need a roof pro’s opinion.
I’m working with a roofing consulant on a fg shingle re-roof. 3:12 pitch, full tear off, existing 1″ T&G decking to remain. The roof is NOT visible, so aesthetics are of no concern.
We’re debating a “40yr” shingle lifetime (Like a Certainteed Hattaras for example) verses “25yr” lifetime (like Certainteed XT25 for example).
Consultant is calling for the cheaper 25yr shingle installed in “High Wind” fashion with 4″ exposure vs 4.5″, as well as 6 nails/shingle instead of 4.
They claim this is cheaper than the 40 yr shingle (even with additional labor/materials factored in) and they expect the useful lifetime to be the same.
What say you all. Is it worth it to upgrade the shingle? Do you think a “40yr” product will give much/any more lifetime than the standard 25yr product installed like this?
Thanks.
