Hiding nail holes in 5/16″ x 2″ oak flrg
I have to install some additional 5/16″ x 2″ oak strip flooring in a customer’s hallway. This will be in addition to some existing flooring of the same type.
In the existing flooring, the nail heads are now hidden by a dirt/finish combination, and I want the new nails in the new section that I’m adding to be similarly hidden. Is there a well-known way of doing this: for example, sanding the floor with a light wet coat of finish on it, so that the slurry fills the holes? other ways?
Thanks for any ideas.

I have that type of flooring, and where we replaced/patched everyone used the colored puttys, mixed a couple different colors to match (after the first seal coat went on), and then finished with oil modified poly.
Aha, that makes a lot of sense. THanks
bob,
I have done a few of those floors and we used a grain sealer, trowel grade. Common practice here.

Just be carefull with putty. The wood will darken, even if you use water based polyurethane so you the lighter color of putty will really stick out after a year or two. I ve seen people use clear wax as a filler and it is less noticable.
Thanks for your replies
