High Tech Kitchen Layout Methods
We put a round kitchen into a design client’s house. Came time for cabinets/counters. Here’s the client’s report:
“We have our trial templates for our kitchen countertops. The digital technology that was used to scan the kitchen was very accurate. It’s neat to see how the countertops will change the way the kitchen looks. The real countertops are due Dec 5. “I actually had the kitchen scanned by two different companies for a competitive quote. They used different methods to scan the kitchen. One used a ranging laser which scanned the kitchen and created an Autocad drawing. The guy mounted a few reflectors around the kitchen for reference points. “The other method used printed sheets of paper, and a wide tape, with circle patterns on them. They were placed on the edges of the cabinets and stool counter framework in both the vertical and horizontal planes. The guy then used a off the shelf digital camera to take pictures of the kitchen, using a number of random locations, probably 20 pictures or so, that covered the entire kitchen redundantly. They then process the photos through some image processing software which forms a composite model of the kitchen by lining up the circle patterns on the tape and sheets between photos, and doing a whole lot of math. The locations and angles of the photos are not critical at all as long as they cover the entire kitchen.” I’m impressed by the way that technology is working its way into the field. No. Havn't seen the latest kitchen tecjnology layout stuff.
But what you just described reminded me of a Star trek episode I saw many years ago, one where scotty was showing someone around the Enterprise, I think it was someone who was lost in time, and he took him to the galley, and said,,.." here, you can get any dish you want" , and the guy said" really? I bet that machine can't make chicken soup", So scotty pressed a button, and 30 seconds later the little door on the wall opened up to present a steaming bowl of hot chicken soup.
A plot pointing system that hooks to a laptop is another method used by several stone companies. The info gathered is then entered with a disc into the cnc machine. With the slab sizes known, it plots the optimum layout.

cool stuff
software comes from the Special FX industry for the moving pictures.
The guy who did it said they could "dial up the accuracy to one millionth of an inch if they wanted too!!!
and then they feed the digital design into a cnc router and it cuts the top from whatever material you feed it...
I'm gonna have the make me an OSB Top milled to 1/1,millionth of an inch.
then I can have it marbleized!!!
you oughto have yer dome marbleized!!!!!
tell peeps it was cut from ONE specially quarried piece...
