Hinge / Jamb templates – Bosch or PC?

Pondfish | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 10, 2006 04:30am

I’m looking to pick up a hinge butt template kit, and have seen the little picture son amazon for the Bosch and PC kits.  Since some of the doors I’ll be hanging have four hinges, I’m looking for a high quality set that can adapt to larger doors.

Any recommendations out there as to which is the better kit?  Searching the archives only resulted in occasional comments (like “it’s good to have a template”), but nothing definitive about wither set.

On the upper left of your screen should be a link to search the site.  Type in something like, hinge template.  You'll get more reading than you can handle for a while, as this topic is discussed with relative frequency.

Good luck.  BTW, I have the PC, and aren't impressed.  Another option to consider, is:

    Although the price is outrageous.

Thanks.  I did search the site and was unimpressed with the results.  Perhaps I was too specific in my search terms.Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005

I've had similar problems recently searching. some times it pulls stuff up like you think it should and other times it's like what's with this. You just know that surely there must be lots of old talk on the issue

Turns out I had too restrictive of a search.  I had no problems finding plenty of comments about the jigs.  Lest you think I didn't search before I posted...Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005

This is an example, I'm trying to find stuff on cordless circular saws, reviews of same performance ect and I'm getting nothing.

What do you mean when you say your search was to restrictive?

Too restrictive meant I was searching for threads that had all the words 'hinge butt template bosch' -- the "butt" caused too few hits.  The same search worked best on eBay and amazon, so I tried it on breaktime.

A search on 'hinge template' returns lots, but then you are wading through them all to find ones that compare the PC and the Bosch.  So I added PC and Bosch, but no ifs ands or butts this time and got the threads I needed.  I'm ordering the Bosch from Amazon now -- on sale for under $140, though not in stock yet.   The additional hinge template costs almost as much ($125) as a new set, so I haven't decided what to do about the doors I'll be handing with 4 hinges.  Still looking for suggestions, other than  comments about searching the archives.  Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005

At that price I'd do what I used to do with my cordless stuff from bosch. Instead of paying way up for batteries I always used to just buy a nother combo set that came with 2 batteries. Needless to say I've got buckets of 9.6v/and 12v drills and batteries and oh did I mention lots of chargers all over the place.

So for the difference I'd get the 2 sets,Hey it's good for America.

Well yu do know we like our tools. But if you wanted you could always just shift the jig. But in our anal world that wouldn't be the same as having a jig that does it all at once.

Hey it's only money, and in the old days I would have just been pissing it away on DUI Fees and lawyer bills. So look at the upside. And the credit charge hangover isn't near as bad as the wake up in jail type.

Two dozen 8' doors, solid mahogany with glass.  Each time you have to move the jig (once for the door, once for the jamb), you introduce risk in mislocating the fourth hinge, and it costs time to readjust the jig.  Why risk it when the doors cost so much?  I don't think this is pissing away money.  Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005

I would, except there's no way to see if two kits can be combined to handle longer doors.  Anyone know?Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005

If it's the Bosch you mean, it'a 83038. Do you have it? I'm using the cheap plastic PC template, and am thinking of moving up.Does a small trim router work well morticing hinges? I'm thinking about getting one to do latch mortices, but not sure which one.

          11. ClaysWorld | Mar 11, 2006 01:27am | #18

No I don't but was hunting around to find info on it.

From what I saw on latch mortise set up it requires a pretty good size 1/2" router that can handle a long bit to reach in deep enough.

And Yea I use a single template with a dewalt trim router for that application. But I don't have the occasion for volume/ production work.

          12. ClaysWorld | Mar 10, 2006 11:28pm | #16

Also went down the amazon reviews and saw this .

"As mentioned by others, the small metal case is much more user friendly than the extra long PC box, but it doesn't hold the 4 hinge conversion kit or the 3 hinge extended rail kit. What most guys do is buy an additional standard kit, and make custom wooden rails for 8 to 10 foot doors. This way you have 6 template sections instead of four, and you can theoretically have 2 guys hanging 6-8 doors for more production."

I think that indicates yu could ? use it as the 4 th hinge but I know some here would Know.

          13. gbwood | Mar 11, 2006 03:15am | #19

if you get two of the three template kits the rails won't be the correct length-you can make them out of wood (as a previous poster penned...) then be good to go...

I have th PC it works great for me never had a prob with it .and you can get many attachments for it to do 4 hinges and longer doors.

          15. ClaysWorld | Mar 10, 2006 11:02pm | #12

And it was more a reference of this idiot(me) pissing away perfectly good tool money on being a drunk. It's ok I'm over that now. The drunk part.

I ain't sure that any hinge template system will function with 4 hinges on a typical 6'8" door. faced with hinging 5 hinges on 10ft jambs , I just selected a cuppla pieces of 1x4 clear straight fir and made my own templates outa MDF Ya, I had to make 10 of em, so I started with a 3/4" rabbet on the underside of the templates so that they would register on the 1x4. Worked out OK.the normal templates just sat in their boxes. Hell their floppy (did I say sloppy??) enuf on a 6'8" jamb, they woulda likely bent dubble trying to lay them on 10' jambs. I don't normally use templates unless theres 5 or 6 doors to hang, them ol stanley butt hinge templates and a sharp chisel works for the most part, OK, maybe a 1/2" radius gouge for clipping the corners too for the RC hinges. But that's just me. And if it's an expensive door, maybe a 71 to clean up the bottom.... MDF stuff don't warrent much more than a sharp chisel to pare the "paper" flat. Just my humble perspective.....Eric
