i’m installing screened porch doors on my house’s screened porch.
the doors (2) will be out swinging double…..like french doors. they are each 78″x23″. they are made of 5/4 poplar, with 2 1/2″ styles and 5″ rails top and bottom as well as 3 1/2″ rails in the middle on the level of the knob. i intend to put a bevel on the knob side of the door.
i have a few questions:
1) can i put operable door knob hardware in a style that is only 2 1/2″ wide without compromising the stability?……keeping in mind that the rail crosses here at this point.
2) are there “smaller” knobs to accomodate this scenario? or should i just use some sort of bullet catch?
3) are “non-mortise” hinges appropriate for this style of door? are they just for cabinet doors?
4) how do you size hinges for doors that are only 1″ thick?
5) do you put the 3 degree bevel on the hinge side too?
i’ve done alot of research, but found that i get more confused than helped.
thanks for any tips,
john

There are screen door hinge sizes and you can surface mount them.
Vand Dykes has an excelent solid brass handle set for a screen door that size. I think it runs about 150 bucks
Stanly has one that is under eight bucks. Prob all in between

Hi John - bad news I'm afraid on the screen door material choice - poplar would be high on the list of woods I wouldn't use where exposed to exterior moisture.
In terms of screen door sets, the $30-40 locksets are absolute junk. The better ones are mortise type and do cost money - this is one I've used:

thanks jeff,i get what you're saying, fortunately the door is deep under a 6' overhang. in future i'll keep that in mind. got caught "using what i had on hand" lol.thanks for the hardware tip, but i think my biggest question was whether the, in this case, mortise lockset or other would compromise the strength of a style only 2 1/2" wide.appreciate it.
That's the point - this is a very small mortise.

Uhm, they make a mortice set for 5/4 thick doors?
I guess they must.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
That's what mine are - 5/4 spanish cedar
spanish cedar "work" well? does it take paint well also?
i just haven't used that.
Paints beautifully and I've never had a problem with bleeding although I do use Cabot Problem Solver Alkyd primer (2 coats).
Not the cheapest stuff but then again, replacing rotted doors isnt' cheap either.

thanks jeff
i was more worried, not about the size of the mortise, but drilling a large hole thru the face of a style only 2.5" wide.
thats all.
