Hi all,
We need to cut through part of the foundation wall with a gas-powered cut-off saw and I was concerned about hitting any re-bar. Will the diamond blade go through it? Would cooling it with water help?
The plan is to rent the saw, so I don’t want to be liable for breaking their blade.
Thanks!
Jim

Diamond tooth blades will go through rebar, talk to the rental person. Water will help. Depending on how much you have to cut you might want to talk to a contractor who has the proper set up to cut openings in concrete. You can do it but holding one of those saws vertically while cutting concrete is a little dangerous.
actually pretty well, the steel will wear out the diamonds less than some of the stone in the concrete will Some of our local concrete is made with a lot of granite and that stuff is terror on the blades!
only way you know you hit rebar is by start sell metal filings come out
Jim, just had to do what your describing. Is your foundation open and fully accesible, or are the walls up? If the walls are up, your going to have a ton of dust and exhaust with that saw. You will need to make a cut on both sides to get all the way through, and dust and saw dust in the crawlspace make for a very unpleasent working environment. Just something to think about, keep a good rotohammer handy.
Not to mention the fact that a gas powered saw is USING UP YOUR OXYGEN in a confined space. Be afraid!
Get a ring saw.
Water cooled
wil cut thru a 10" wall from one side!!
if not available get a 14" or 16" demo saw with water attachment and a diamond blade.

Do you actually think we change the diamond blade out when we have to cut a few pieces of RB or a steel lintel or two........I don't and I'm the boss and the guy who has to pay for it.

What's your thought on them? Can it go fast enough to make it worth while or is it vey slow?
If you rent the saw, they will have a profile on the blade. Rebar will accelerate the wear and most rental yards will prorate your rental fee.
When I know I might encounter what you're doing, I tell the rental yard guys. They usually have a few blades around that have been abused or are well worn and will not charge you if you finish them off. And most of those blades still do the job just fine.
As a sidenote, I've always played straight up with the rental yard I use. If I blow a hose or damage something that was my fault, I tell them. So many people try to shirk their responsibility by bringing back machinery they've abused and either say nothing, or give some BS about how it was that way when they got it. People like that are like hit and run drivers or lazy a$$es that won't push their grocery carts out of the parking lot.
Be a good guy! It pays off long term.
